What is it?
Math Talk is the process of having students explain and justify their answers as a part of their daily classroom activities. It requires students to go beyond simply giving an answer and instead explain the process for how they arrived at the answer.
Students might explain the process for solving a problem verbally or they might provide a written explanation or drawing.
Math discourse is the technical term for this strategy, but it is often referred to as Math Talks, Number Talks, or simply communication in the math classroom.
